The latest venture in Excell's 'Project Sunshine' took place over two days in November at Freightliners Farm, Islington. Freightliners is a small farm in an urban setting providing the opportunity for local individuals and groups to learn from and interact with the environment and each other through animal care, horticulture and sustainable practices. Its purpose is to provide an educational and recreational recourse for the community, promoting social welfare and quality of life through a collaborative and inclusive community project.
The farm has an assortment of animals including cows, sheep, ducks, rabbits and even a beehive which has earned the farm an award for producing the best city farm honey in London.
Excell's first task on a bright but cold Wednesday morning was to build a concrete ramp to allow wheelchair access to the toilet block. Over the two days the main task was to renovate the amenities block and so the teams set about sanding, painting and cleaning in the kitchen, dairy and toilets. The team also built wooden planters to be placed alongside the concrete ramp. Everyone worked hard to spruce up the amenities block and achieved a great deal over the two very hands-on days.
Project sunshine is an on-going project that sees staff getting out of the office and into the community. Each employee is given two days out of the office over the course of the year to get involved on projects that impact on local communities. Our previous project took place at Huntingdonshire Community Nursery in October, click here to find out more.
