The sun shines on Excell's latest community project

The latest venture in Excell's 'Project Sunshine' took place over 3 days in October at the Huntingdonshire Community Nursery project. Project Sunshine is an on-going project that sees staff getting out of the office and into the community, each employee is given two days out of the office over the course of a year to get involved in projects that impact on their local communities.

The Huntingdonshire Community Nursery project works with special needs groups with a wide range of ages and abilities to encourage an understanding and enjoyment of gardening, horticulture and the countryside. It produces trees for the Parish Planting Scheme, vegetables and flowers for the community and sustains local varieties of fruit and trees. The Nursery is made up of different areas, A Tree Nursery, Orchard, Bee friendly Garden, Vegetable and fruit gardens.

Excell's first task was to help construct a brand new "Winter Interest Garden". A team of 30 volunteers from across Excell's offices and departments came together to form the 'Red team' that would carry out work on the garden across the three days.

The first task on a sunny but chilly Wednesday morning was to begin by creating a pathway for the visitors and volunteers to stroll along while taking in the wintery and interesting garden around it. Over the next couple of days the rest of the Red Team set about creating flower beds, digging, planting and completing the pathway.

Mary Evans, Project officer for Huntingdon Community Nursery commented: "We were delighted to welcome such pleasant and enthusiastic volunteers from Excell to Huntingdonshire Community Nursery. Everyone pitched in and transformed a disused area into a pleasant winter interest garden in a remarkably short time."
